Do You Feel Stuck in a Job You Hate (And Can't Leave... Yet)☀️

Good morning, Reader,
Rise & Thrive!

I've had two clients email me this week upset because they're no longer feeling fulfilled at work. The shame of it is that neither of them has the flexibility right now to search for something new.

Feeling trapped in a job that drains you can be exhausting. It can also feel like burn out. Especially when walking away may not be an option. Whether it’s financial responsibilities, family needs, or the uncertainty of what’s next, you’re not alone in this feeling. But being stuck doesn’t mean you have to stay stagnant.

Here are three things that can help shift your energy to regain some control:

Focus On What’s Within Your Control

✔️When everything feels out of alignment, it helps to narrow your focus to the things you can influence. Can you redesign how you structure your day? Can you carve out 15 minutes a day for something that you enjoy? Adding something to your routine that’s in your control can bring back a sense of purpose and satisfaction.

Build a Bridge Not a Wall

✔️You may not be able to quit today, but that doesn’t mean you have to stay forever. Start building a bridge to the next chapter by taking a class, updating your resume, or networking a little each week. These small steps don’t just open new doors, they remind you that this isn’t your final destination.

Protect Your Energy Like It’s Gold

✔️If your job is wearing you down, then you need to be even more intentional about protecting your peace outside of work. This might mean saying no more often, spending time with people who make you feel good, or unplugging for real.

Self-preservation isn’t selfish—it’s necessary.

How to Manage the 3 Common Reasons for Burnout at Work

Burnout doesn’t just happen because of too much work. It’s often a combination of factors that leave you feeling unfulfilled or unsupported. By addressing these root causes, you can create a healthier work environment for yourself and avoid burnout before it takes hold.

Below are 3 common causes of burnout at work and how you can manage.

Lack of Control
✔️Feeling like you have little influence over your tasks or decision-making can lead to frustration, a lack of motivation, and a sense of helplessness. If possible, try to advocate for more autonomy in your role. Try having an open conversation with your manager about how you can take more ownership of your work. Setting clear boundaries around how you prefer to work can also give you more control over your day-to-day tasks.

Unclear Expectations
✔️When expectations aren’t clearly defined, you end up feeling like you’re always playing catch-up, unsure of what success looks like, or constantly worried about not meeting standards. It’s helpful to have regular check-ins with your manager or team to align goals. Also, try breaking down long-term projects into smaller, measurable tasks with clear deadlines to keep things on track.

Lack of Support or Recognition
✔️Feeling like your hard work goes unnoticed or that you have no support can quickly lead to disengagement and exhaustion. It’s important to ask for support when needed, whether that’s additional resources, training, or simply help with a difficult task. It’s often difficult to seek out the regular feedback and praise from colleagues or supervisors that you may be looking for. However, learn to celebrate your own wins, even if others don’t.

Your Career Doesn't Exist In a Vacuum

What's good for your career, should also be what's good for your life!

Three years ago, I found my way back to exercise. I started with yoga and before I knew it I was working with a trainer and lifting weights. I now love going to the gym. Not only did I lose 20 pounds, the results have been motivating, too!

I encourage my clients to find the time, even if it's once a week, to do something they enjoy. We're creatures of habit, and if you select one time a week to take a martial arts class or go for a hike, you'd be surprised at how invigorating and motivating it can be. It also improves your mood and work day.

If you would like to discuss your career strategy with me, or learn more about my Resume Writing, Career Coaching and Executive Coaching programs, as always, please sign up for a Complimentary 30-Minute session on my calendar below.
